What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK surgery has revolutionized the field of vision correction, offering a permanent alternative to traditional eyewear. It involves reshaping the cornea (the eye's front surface) using a laser, allowing light to be properly focused onto the retina and improving vision without the need for glasses or contacts. This makes it ideal for people with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

This procedure is known for its rapid recovery time and immediate results. However, the journey towards a successful LASIK outcome requires a collaborative partnership between the patient, the LASIK surgeon, and the co-managing eye doctor.

The Role of LASIK Co-Management

LASIK co-management is a holistic approach to vision correction. This process has various phases:

  1. Initial Evaluation: The journey begins with a pre-operative evaluation done by an eye doctor. This assessment includes a comprehensive eye exam, corneal mapping, and an in-depth discussion about your visual needs and expectations.
  2. Surgeon Selection and Procedure: Once you’re declared an ideal candidate for LASIK, our co-managing eye doctor will liaise with a reputable LASIK surgeon to determine the most suitable surgical approach. We’ll also educate you about the procedure and address any concerns so you can make an informed decision.
  3. Surgical Day: On the day of the surgery, the LASIK surgeon will use advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea. In some cases, our co-managing eye doctor may be present to provide support before and after the surgery.
  4. Post-Operative Care: This is where LASIK co-management truly shines, as the co-managing professional monitors the healing process, tracks visual progress, and addresses any potential complications. We schedule regular follow-up appointments to ensure the eyes are healing properly and the vision is improving as expected.

Post-LASIK Eyewear & Care

After undergoing LASIK surgery or any other refractive surgery, it's important to follow post-operative instructions.

Our co-managing eye doctor may prescribe temporary eyewear if you're experiencing blurry vision and other side effects after your procedure. You'll also need temporary eyewear for activities that could pose a risk to the eyes, such as contact sports or outdoor adventures, as it can provide an added layer of protection while the eyes are still healing. Scleral contact lenses, for instance, have a pocket of saline solution that can also help maintain the cornea's moisture and comfort. Additionally, a quality pair of sunglasses with UV protection is essential to safeguard your eyes from harmful sun rays that can impact eye health.

Using lubricating eye drops as prescribed, attending follow-up appointments, and following other post-operative guidelines are also essential for a successful and smooth recovery process.
