DR ERIC E. SCHMIDT founder of Bladen Eye Center, brings 22 years of expertise to Wilmington. He received his Undergraduate in 1983 from University of Illinois. He received his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and did an internship and fellowship in Glaucoma. He lectures internationally to his colleagues on Glaucoma, Diabetes and Retinal Disorders. Dr. Schmidt believes that exquisite eye care should be delivered to each individual patient. He wants to meet the needs of each individual patient in a compassionate manner. Dr. Schmidt also embraces the fact that state-of-the-art eye care can be delivered in a comfortable setting right here in Bladen County. The ability to provide cutting-edge eye care in our hometown is paramount to him.
Dr. Schmidt enjoys water sports, outdoor activities and boating, when he is not practicing Optometry. He has three children, Katie and Mackenzie are currently at The University of North Carolina in The School of Journalism and his son, Sam is currently at Hoggard High School, active in baseball. Dr. Schmidt and his wife, Tracey have resided in North Carolina for over 22 years and love it!
Dr. Meredith Treece is an honors graduate of North Carolina State University. Following that she graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. While there, Dr. Treece received the Eagle Vision Award for excellence in ocular disease.
Dr. Treece has a passion for helping people. She has done several optometric mission trips providing eye care in underprivileged areas within the United States and in South America. She enjoys treating ocular disease and fitting contact lenses.
Dr. Treece is an active member of the American Optometric Association and the North Carolina Optometric Society. She is the current district president of the local chapter.
In her spare time, Dr. Treece enjoys spending time with her husband, Ben and their two children, Charlotte and Harrison. She also loves time on the water, reading and sewing.
Melissa A. Barbor, OD has extensive experience and training in contact lens fitting, post-surgical care, and ocular disease treatment. She received her doctorate from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where she graduated with honors. As part of her extensive training process, she completed multiple internships. Dr. Barbor trained at Omni Eye Services in Atlanta, Georgia, where she focused on treatment of ocular disease. She also completed an internship in pediatric eye care at The Eye Institute at The Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Finally, Dr. Barbor studied in a contact lens internship under the direction of Dr. William Morrison, a leader in contact lens technology.
Dr. Barbor has acted as an investigator for medical clinical trials including pharmaceutical formulations, new laser technologies and intraocular lens implants. Currently, she serves as a consultant for research sites who are participating in clinical trials related to Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Dry Eye treatment. Dr. Barbor has served as a Clinical Examiner for The National Board of Examiners in Optometry. She has also held workshops at Georgetown University in Washington, DC on the fitting of contact lenses and evaluation. Additionally, Dr. Barbor stays active in her field as a reviewer for the Council on Practitioner Education. She is a specialist in contact lens fitting, dry eye treatment and management and primary care of ocular disease.
She has recently relocated to North Carolina from Washington, DC. She has a daughter in college and is looking forward to living closer to the beach. Travel, hiking and gardening are her favorite activities outside of the office.
